Fremskrittspartiet

Lords of Chaos

Fremskrittspartiet is described as the political successor that emerged when the party founded by Anders Lange later mutated into a larger force. Though Lange’s original party did not itself make the transition into mainstream politics, its legacy continued through Fremskrittspartiet, which grew into one of Norway’s biggest parliamentary presences.

Origins and succession

Anders Lange established the party and led it until his death the following year. The account distinguishes the limited reach of that original organization from the later trajectory of its successor: Lange’s party never really entered mainstream politics, but it subsequently developed into what became known as Fremskrittspartiet.

Eivind Eckbo, an attorney who had followed the party from its inception, assumed the leadership after Lange died and held the position for six months. Eckbo also held posts in Fremskrittspartiet, linking the founder’s immediate organizational legacy with the later party.

Growth and political context

Fremskrittspartiet’s expansion gathered force in the 1980s, when it rode a neo-conservative wave that also brought Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher to office. The comparison places the party’s growth within a wider political climate, without suggesting that its development simply duplicated either leader’s politics.

In the account’s retrospective, Fremskrittspartiet has become one of Norway’s largest parliamentary presences. Its polling position nevertheless tends to rise and fall, so its prominence is not presented as a steady or unbroken ascent.
